SmartServ Online and Data on Air Join Forces to Offer End-to-End
Wireless Portal Solution for Remote Information Delivery
Services Include One-Way Short Messaging Services (SMS) and Interactive
End-To-End Solutions Based On the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)
Standard
Stamford, CT -- Sept. 13, 1999 -
SmartServ Online Inc. (OTC: SSOL), a leading developer of Internet-based
applications serving the wireline and wireless industries, and Data on Air
Inc., a leading provider of advanced data gateway services for the wireless
carrier industry, Monday announced 4Air.net(TM), a wireless portal and gateway
hosting solution for wireless carriers and enterprise customers. The collaborative
solution enables carriers to use the power of the World Wide Web to extend
their brand identities and easily implement value-added information services to
subscribers. The first services offered may be accessed from various
wireless devices over GSM, CDMA, TDMA, iDEN and other wireless networks that support
delivery of short messaging services. In the future, the 4Air.net wireless
portal service will serve all devices with built-in WAP microbrowsers.
"The combination of Data on Air's gateway hosting expertise and SmartServ
Online's content and application development gives this team a unique competitive
advantage," said Robert Pearl, SmartServ Online's director of business
development. "Most wireless carriers aren't interested in piecing together
components from multiple vendors to build an end-to-end solution. 4Air.net
is a simple, comprehensive, packaged solution that can be easily deployed on
virtually any network." Partnerships with other component vendors such as
handset manufacturers are expected to further strengthen the integrity of
the packaged solution.
About 4Air.net
The basic 4Air.net service will feature a Web-based provisioning system
from which subscribers select categories of information services such as news,
sports, weather, horoscopes, lottery, traffic and stock quote alerts. The
provisioning Web site allows subscribers to select the type and frequency
of alerts they receive. SmartServ Online is developing content that is
optimized for wireless users with small, handheld devices, and Data on Air will host
the gateways through which wireless users receive the information. Since most
functions can be configured directly by the end user, carriers can launch
the new service quickly and smoothly, while minimizing the burden on internal
operations staff. Data on Air's Network Operations Center in Orlando, Fla.
will also handle all "back room" data center operations and routing for carriers
offering the 4Air.net service. The center is equipped with
high-availability redundant application servers, fully redundant fiber connections to the
Internet backbone and interfaces to a large number of wireless networks. "Our
primary objective is to give wireless subscribers easy, affordable access to
information they need and want," said Data on Air's senior vice president, Bill
Poellmitz.
"SmartServ Online's focus on selecting and optimizing information sources
ensures that our wireless gateway can deliver services that are compelling
and simple to use. Data on Air's new 'portal server' technology shifts the task
of managing microbrowser menus and bookmarks to the user-minimizing rollout
time and expense."
WAP Application Development
As the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) standard is adopted by the
cellular industry, the 4Air.net wireless portal service will be expanded to serve
all devices with built-in WAP microbrowsers. The developers are planning a
broad array of unique, interactive services such as stock trade order entry,
location-based weather alerts, e-mail and fax redistribution, wireless
access to flower and gift purchases, event ticketing and other e-commerce services.
The new WAP-based services will run over virtually any wireless network that
supports data transmission, including the widely-used AMPS Cellular Digital
Packet Data (CDPD) service.
Availability
The 4Air.net portal will be demonstrated at the PCS '99 show, to be held
September 22-24, in New Orleans, La., at the SmartServ Online booth No.
2432.
Carrier trials are expected to begin in October. Monthly pricing is
dependent on the services chosen, and starts as low as $ 2 per month.
