Certicom Announces Availability of WTLS Plus Toolkit For Secure WAP Services
High-performance developer toolkit brings desktop-level, efficient security protocol to wireless environments
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Wireless IT '99, November 3, 1999 - Certicom Corp., a leading provider of next-generation encryption technology, today announced the release of WTLS PlusTM, engineered specifically for the demanding memory, performance, and bandwidth requirements of wireless environments. WTLS Plus, compliant with the WAP Forum's WTLS 1.1 standard, builds on Certicom's leadership position in developing Internet-standard SSL and elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) security technologies to enable wireless e-commerce and secure enterprise connectivity inside any wireless computing environment.
Developed by the WAP Forum, the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is an open, global specification that empowers mobile users with wireless devices to easily access and interact with information and services instantly. WAP Forum is an industry association comprised of over 200 members including: Certicom, Ericsson, Lucent Technologies, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Phone.com and Sprint.
WTLS Plus enables WAP developers to provide desktop-strength security on their WAP client and server implementations, and incorporates Certicom's market leading ECC technology. The small size, high performance, and cost advantages of ECC are a natural fit for small form-factor devices, e-commerce, and other wireless applications requiring commercial-strength security.
"Certicom is widely regarded as a trusted leader in mobile e-commerce encryption technology," said Keith Benson, chairman and CEO of Newcom Technologies Pty Ltd. "As an early licensee of Certicom's WTLS Plus technology, we are able to extend our FungeTM Open Platform to the WAP environment."
Proven Expertise in Wireless Data Security
Certicom is recognized as an established leader in providing security for wireless data networks and devices. WTLS Plus compliments existing Certicom security products and services in the market, where Certicom has enabled customers to deploy many new enterprise and consumer applications, such as:
Secure access to enterprise data and applications from a handheld phone or device over a wireless network. Leading wireless middleware providers, such as JP Systems, Nettech, AvantGo, Riverbed Technologies and Puma Technologies have licensed Certicom technology to provide a secure wireless enterprise connectivity solution.
Secure wireless e-commerce transactions. Certicom has licensed its technology to 3Com/Palm Computing to enable such transactions over the Palm VII, and in addition, has partnered with BellSouth Wireless Data to enable similar applications over the RIM (sounds awkward - Rim from Rim?!) pager from Research in Motion.
Secure on-line transactions over GSM mobile networks. In the area of GSM mobile commerce, Certicom has licensed its ECC technology to Newcom and Schlumberger to enable secure financial and enterprise applications over GSM mobile networks, using secure smart card technology.
WTLS Plus now enables Certicom to offer customers secure wireless e-commerce and enterprise solutions over multiple wireless networks and devices, and across WAP, GSM, and smart card technologies. Certicom provides a one-stop solution for the security needs of a WAP proxy provider. WTLS Plus delivers the most efficient wireless link security available and utilizes Certicom's SSL PlusTM security toolkit to secure communication between the WAP proxy and standard Internet servers.
"WTLS Plus further establishes Certicom's leadership position offering efficient security solutions in the wireless marketplace," said Rick Dalmazzi, president of Certicom. "We have actively participated in WAP Forum and in the development of wireless standards, and are excited to add secure WAP implementations to our growing portfolio of security products and services."
