PHONE.COM ANNOUNCES NEW E-COMMERCE AND AUTOMATED PROVISIONING FEATURES FOR UP.LINK SERVER RELEASE 4.2 New features enable operators to facilitate and take part in e-commerce transactions and simplify WAP provisioning NEW ORLEANS, CTIA Wireless 2000 (February 28, 2000) - Phone.com, Inc. (Nasdaq:PHCM), a leading provider of WAP-based mobile Internet software and services, today announced that it expects to begin shipping the UP.Link Server Suite Release 4.2 during early 2nd quarter 2000. With this release, Phone.com continues its commitment to provide leading edge, WAP-compliant wireless Internet solutions. Release 4.2 of the UP.Link Server provides continuous product improvements as well as new features such as more detailed and robust billing, and the ability to automatically register new subscribers.
With Release 4.2, operators are able to gather more detailed billing information, and can even bill for feature and service access in cooperation with an application developer. Application-specific billing allows an operator and content provider to agree upon a format for sharing billing and transaction information from the application Web server to the operator. For example, with this feature an application can inform the operators UP.Link with the details of how many transactions were performed, and the total amount spent. With this information, the operators billing system can add charges for the transactions to the subscribers bill, consolidating all of his or her mobile e-commerce transactions in one convenient place. This feature opens new opportunities for wireless operators to participate in e-commerce activities, and simplifies the billing process for the application provider.
UP.Link Server Release 4.2 also helps operators streamline their WAP handset provisioning process. Used in conjunction with Phone.coms powerful Mobile Management Server, Release 4.2s auto-registration feature allows operators to distribute handsets to subscribers without having to pre-provision them. This allows operators to reduce initial provisioning costs, and simplifies the transaction at the point of sale.
"Its significant that these features have been designed to work well with all WAP-enabled devices, such as those using Phone.coms UP.Browser, and those from other WAP manufacturers," said Ben Linder, Vice President of Marketing at Phone.com. "With these product enhancements, Phone.com continues to demonstrate its commitment to WAP solutions, while adding value above and beyond that of a basic WAP gateway."
As part of its commitment to continuous product and service improvement, Phone.com has also made enhancements to the UP.Link Server to continue the products evolution to higher levels of scalability, manageability, and reliability. For example, Release 4.2 allows operators to monitor the operation and performance of the UP.Link Server to a finer degree of detail using standard SNMP-based tools from their existing Network Operations Center (NOC). With this feature, operators can better profile platform performance, and provide an even higher degree of service reliability to their subscribers.
