Ericsson unveils the first embedded WAP over Bluetooth Server

Today, Ericsson announced an embedded WAP server to be used in an implemented Bluetooth environment. This new product is a natural complement to the extensive set Bluetooth products and tools that are available from Ericsson already today.

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is a technology that can bring not only Internet content but also local information to users of wireless devices. WAP in a wireless device is an ideal user interface for information downloading and for controlling a remote device.

A WAP browser is becoming a standard feature in mobile phones and handheld devices. To access a WAP Server in a Bluetooth device, a standard mobile phone with a built-in WAP browser can be used. Today, only a few appliances can be remotely controlled. Built-in Bluetooth wireless technology in these appliances together with the rapid expansion of WAP devices thus represents a unique opportunity.

The embedded WAP Server has been developed by Ericsson and enables OEMs to add both WAP and Bluetooth connectivity to products such as TVs, VCRs, DVDs and set top boxes, local information points, cars, locks for homes, garage door openers, etc.

Using the embedded WAP server in a Bluetooth device makes it possible to implement WAP in a small and low cost device. All the software needed for Bluetooth wireless technology, WAP and the application are executed by a single component, e.g. the Ericsson Bluetooth Module.
