Sarade.com and APiON to Conduct WAP Gateway Trials
Partnership to provide WAP-based wireless data services worldwide
San Francisco, CA - June 29, 1999 - Sarade.com, a world leader in the delivery of Internet-based services to wireless devices, and APiON Ltd., a cutting-edge network software provider, today announced a partnership to conduct WAP Gateway trials. The trials are consistent with Sarade.com's global strategy to commercially deploy all of its services to WAP-enabled devices.
Scheduled to begin in the summer of 1999, the trials will allow Sarade.com to integrate the APiON WAP Gateway into its global infrastructure. Sarade.com plans to offer WAP-based wireless data services in the third quarter of 1999.
WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is a worldwide standard for providing Internet communications and advanced telephony services on digital mobile phones, pagers, personal digital assistants and other wireless terminals.
According to industry analysts, the market for WAP technology is on the verge of an explosion. Strategy Analytics predicts that as many as 525 million WAP handsets will be shipped in the United States and Western Europe between 1999 and 2003.
"The partnership with APiON is a continuation of Sarade.com's mandate to provide wireless carriers with best-of-breed wireless Internet services to any device regardless of protocol or standard," said Sarade.com chief technology officer, Julian Craddock. "We recognize the enormous potential WAP technology offers to the market. This WAP Gateway trial furthers our commitment to support open standards and technologies as they emerge."
With APiON's WAP Gateway, Sarade.com enables wireless devices to access WAP and information content services in the mobile operator's network or from the Internet. The APiON WAP Gateway has been designed for scalability allowing Sarade.com to offer carriers easy integration with existing network infrastructure, such as wireless data bearers, billing and network management systems.
Sarade.com provides Internet-based wireless data services to carriers in North America, Europe and Asia, including Microcell, Omnitel, KPN, KDP and diAX. Wireless subscribers receive customized, time-sensitive, location-based information services such as e-mail, stock quotes, travel information, calendars, contact lists, personal banking, electronic commerce, and much more. Information can be delivered over any air interface to any mobile device.
"We're excited to embark on this trial with Sarade.com as it introduces WAP-based wireless data services to the market," said APiON managing director, Denis Murphy. "Carriers are looking for solutions which are easily integrated into their existing infrastructure. This partnership will provide them with a viable solution based on open standards."
