Agreement
Signed to Achieve Interoperability Between Nokia and Unwired Planet Wireless Application
Protocol Based Products
(January 13, 1999) - Nokia and Unwired
Planet, Inc. (UP) initiated interoperability testing between the two companies' products.
As co-founders of the WAP Forum (www.wapforum.org), both Nokia and Unwired PlanetTM are
committed to WAP interoperability.
This effort is an important step towards implementing the WAP
interoperability and conformance requirements as they are formalized. Testing is already
underway in a program designed to make both companies' WAP product releases compatible.
Nokia's handsets with the Nokia WAP microbrowser will be com-patible with Unwired Planet's
UP.LinkTM Server.
"Establishing compatibility between Nokia's and Unwired
Planet's WAP products is a critical step towards establishing a global market for wireless
data," said Aage Snorgaard, vice president of Wire-less Services for Nokia Mobile
Phones. "Nokia is committed to interoperability and open standards to accelerate the
availability of the first WAP solutions for its customers."
"UP is committed to making the UP. Link Platform compatible
with the Nokia WAP microbrowser," said Alain Rossmann, chairman and chief executive
officer for Unwired Planet. "Nokia is the leading wireless manufacturer and dynamic
innovator in this industry. Achieving compatibility between Nokia's handsets and UP's
servers will enable carriers to rapidly roll out world-class information services."
The Wireless Application Protocol is a de-facto standard for
Internet content and advanced telephony services in digital mobile phones and other
wireless terminals. The WAP Forum has published a global wireless protocol specification
for all wireless networks that will be contributed to the appropriate standard bodies. WAP
enables manufacturers, network operators, content providers and application developers to
offer compatible products and secure services on all digital devices and networks
resulting in greater economies of scale and universal access to information. WAP Forum
membership is open to all industry participants. A membership application form and the
Version 1.0 specification are available for download at the WAP Forum Web site:
www.wapforum.org.
