Nokia invites the Software developer community to review the
Nokia WAP Server APIFirst
ever WAP API specification on the Internet
(May 24, 1999) - Nokia continues its
strong commitment to boosting the emergence of the WAP market by inviting the application
developer community to review the Nokia WAP Server API (Application Programming Interface)
Specification to be released for the first time ever to the market. The specification,
directed at WAP application developers, is available at www.nokia.com/corporate/wap
Releasing the API to the public is another step in NOKIA's commitment
to open standards and bringing the wealth of the Internet to mobile phones. Early this
year Nokia made its WAP Toolkit available free of charge from the Internet, for developing
applications based on the Wireless Application Protocol.
At Cebit, Nokia announced the Nokia WAP Server, a software product that
enables companies to provide mobile access to information and services available on
Internet and private Intranet as well as other information systems. In addition to
implementing gateway functionality between company web servers and wireless networks, the
Nokia WAP Server operates as an open server platform for hosting content, stand-alone
applications and connectors to other information systems. Other WAP products from Nokia
include the market's first WAP phone, the 7110, as well as the Nokia Artus Messaging
Platform with its WAP gateway.
Nokia today announces availability of the Nokia WAP Server API
Specification to provide application developers with detailed information about
programming interfaces available for advanced WAP applications and services. The Nokia WAP
Server API includes three main interface categories which will provide application
developers with a familiar and expandable environment for implementing WAP applications:
1. standard JavaTM Servlet API for general application
development
2. WAP Service API for accessing advanced information and
services in the Nokia WAP Server
3. Server Extension API for customizing the functionality of the
Nokia WAP Server to meet specific needs.
"The opportunity to review the Nokia WAP Server API Specification
is an additional step in Nokia's efforts to help the developer community get ready for
emerging wireless application markets. In addition to reducing WAP developers'
time-to-market, reviewing the API specification will provide application developers with
an opportunity to contribute to the development and future improvement of the Nokia WAP
Server and its interfaces," says Mr. Gerhard Romen, Vice President, Sales and
Marketing, Nokia Wireless Software Solutions.
About WAP
WAP is an open global standard for communication between a mobile
handset and the Internet or other computer applications. WAP-based technology enables the
design of advanced, interactive and real-time mobile services, such as mobile banking or
Internet based news services, which can be used in digital mobile phones or other mobile
devices. The WAP specification enables solutions from various suppliers to work
consistently for end-users on the digital networks. For more information about WAP, see
